Long AI projects rarely fail because the next chat cannot generate text. They fail because the useful project state never makes the jump.
If you move from one ChatGPT conversation to another, switch models, or hand work to a teammate, the safest approach is not to copy the whole transcript. Carry forward the small amount of state the next session actually needs.
What should an AI project handoff contain?
- Objective: what the project is trying to achieve now.
- Current state: what is finished, live, tested, blocked or still open.
- Decisions: choices already made so the next chat does not reopen them.
- Constraints: rules, limits and things that must not change.
- Authoritative sources: the files, URLs or records that should be trusted.
- Unknowns and blockers: what still needs evidence or a decision.
- Deferred work: useful ideas deliberately left for later.
- Next action: the smallest meaningful thing the next session should do.
Why copying the entire chat is usually the wrong fix
A long transcript mixes current decisions with abandoned ideas, repeated prompts, temporary assumptions and old versions of the plan. Giving all of it to a fresh session can make the new conversation spend time reconstructing which parts still matter.
A handoff should preserve state, not recreate history. Keep the evidence and decisions that affect what happens next. Leave behind conversational noise.
A simple handoff test
Before leaving a project, ask: could a fresh AI session tell me the current objective, what has already been decided, what it must not undo, where the trusted sources are, and the next safe action?
If the answer is no, the project is still dependent on the old chat.

That makes the handoff smaller, easier to check and easier to reuse across future chats, models or teammates.
