What should an AI project brief contain?
- Objective: the outcome you are actually trying to reach.
- Success condition: what would count as done or good enough.
- Current state: what already exists and what has already happened.
- Scope: what is inside the task and what is deliberately outside it.
- Requirements and constraints: what the result must contain and the limits it must respect.
- Decisions: choices already made that should not be casually reopened.
- Sources: files, URLs, records or evidence the AI should treat as authoritative.
- Deliverable: the exact output you expect.
- Unknowns and blockers: what is unresolved instead of pretending everything is known.
- Next action: what should happen first once the brief is loaded.
A long prompt is not automatically a good brief
Length does not guarantee useful context. A long prompt can still omit the governing source, success condition, scope boundary or a decision that must be preserved.
A useful brief separates stable project context from the immediate task. That lets you update the task without repeatedly rebuilding the project’s basic contract.
Five warning signs your brief is not ready
- You cannot describe success without saying “something good” or “make it better”.
- The AI would have to guess which source is current.
- Important constraints exist only in an old conversation.
- You have not said what is outside scope.
- A fresh chat would need to interview you again before it could safely continue.
